Crossing time zones and leaving the busy streets of the Big Apple for a weekend, Marilyn Vigil-Harris (they/them) brings their knowledge and grace to the 505 for an in-depth and intense weekend of Salsa training.
The weekend will bring a focus on fundamentals to help create a strong basis for all dancers from brand new beginners to experienced dancers.
Marilyn brings an exceptional background of training, performing, and teaching from their base in New York City to their roots here in New Mexico. We welcome Marilyn to help continue the progression of technique and skills of our local area dancers.

Focus on Fundamentals:
This Weekender is focused on helping On2 dancers build and deepen the skills that they need and use every time they social dance. These bootcamps and workshops are designed to build on each other, so that the skills you learn on Saturday with your footwork you can start to bring into your partnerwork training on Sunday. The basics never go out of style, so whether you are brand new to On2 or are an experienced dancer, there is something to learn for everyone at this event!
Absolute Beginners Bootcamp: This two-day, three-hour bootcamp is for brand new dancers or for dancers transitioning from On1 to On2 style salsa. We will cover how to dance the basic salsa step, review basic body positioning, practice listening to the music to dance on time, and learn four basic partnerwork patterns: a cross-body lead, an open break, and right and left turns.
Social Dancing Bootcamp: This two-hour bootcamp is for any dancer who wants to build their skill and technique in partnerwork patterns they can use all the time while social dancing. This course builds on what is covered in Absolute Beginners and is open to attendees of the Absolute Beginners Bootcamp.
Timing, Rhythm, Musicality and Body Movement Workshop: This 90-minute workshop is for dancers of all levels, and focuses on the different tools you can use to create dynamics and versatility in your dancing. We’ll talk about different ways you can interpret the instruments in a salsa song, how to become more aware of counting in your dancing, and how you can create more movement in your body while dancing your basic step.
20 Essential Mambo Steps: Footwork is the key to being a great partner dancer. Footwork helps teach you how to count, builds your speed and agility, and can help you find your personal style. It’s the perfect opportunity for self-expression when you’re doing shines at a social, but also a great way to practice dancing on time and using your body movement so that these are readily available for you to use while you partner dance. Maybe you frequently attend dance congresses but don’t recognize many of the steps that are being shown, and you’d like to pick up those combinations more quickly. This workshop will equip you for all of this and more– come learn 20 essential mambo steps that you’ll be able to use forever! This 90-minute workshop is for dancers of all levels.
Meet Your Instructor:
Bio: Marilyn Vigil-Harris (they/them) is a queer, non-binary dance artist and instructor based in New York City and with deep family roots in New Mexico. A dancer since age 10 and a lifelong performer and entertainer, Mari has trained extensively in Afro-Latin dance styles including Salsa On1, Salsa On2, New York Mambo and Afro-Cuban Folkloric dance, with additional experience in jazz, ballet, hip-hop and street jazz. Mari’s passion for salsa spans social, performance and competitive styles. Mari competed in the World Latin Dance Cup as a member of Salsamania Dance Company, directed by world champions Jhon Narvaez and Liz Rojas, and finished second in the On2 Amateur Division with their partner, Jose De la Torre, in 2018. Upon moving to New York in 2019, Mari trained with world champions Ernesto Bulness and Denisse Cambria as a member of their Iroko Semi-Pro team. Mari is currently continuing their training as both a lead and follow at Empire Mambo, under the instruction of world-renowned dancers Adolfo Indacochea, Angel Peguero, Stephany Moore, Charlie Garcia, and Brianna Rios. Mari is passionate about creating accessible dance spaces that foster community and connection for dancers of all genders, and especially about supporting beginner dancers to build the skills and confidence needed to thrive in their dance journeys.
